For over 10 years, this spiked eggnog recipe has been a holiday staple in my home. Perfect for Christmas celebrations, cookie exchanges, or even a festive Christmas in July gathering (if you can find pre-made eggnog that time of year), this easy-to-make treat has stood the test of time. Let me walk you through the history of this beloved drink, the simple ingredients used to whip it up, and a few tips to make it uniquely yours.
A Brief History of Eggnog
Eggnog has a rich history, dating back to medieval Britain. It originated as a warm, ale-based drink called “posset.” Over time, milk, eggs, and spices were added to create the creamy concoction we know today. When the drink came to colonial America, rum replaced ale as the spirit of choice, and eggnog became synonymous with holiday cheer.

Spiked Eggnog Recipe Ingredient Recommendations
Eggnog
This practical recipe uses pre-made eggnog. If you have a good homemade eggnog recipe, give it a try. Otherwise, this recipe is designed for simplicity and convenience. Grab a carton of eggnog at your local grocer or supermarket and enjoy.
Frozen Whipped Topping
Cool Whip is a great option but a regular store-brand is fine. It’s okay if it’s not completely thawed but it shouldn’t be completely frozen. If it’s not entirely thawed, the ice cream scoop will serve double duty here.
Ice Cream
French vanilla ice cream is a good choice, but any plain vanilla ice cream will do. A store-brand option can do the trick. Keep in mind, that you likely won’t use the entire container.
Rum
As the recipe calls for, use Captain Morgan’s Spice Rum. This is non-negotiable. Its warm, spiced notes pair perfectly with the creamy eggnog base.
Spiked Eggnog Recipe Finishing Touches
Serve your spiked eggnog in special glasses to make it feel extra festive. We have a short-stemmed glassware set that came with our pitcher. Or you can use holiday-themed glasses. For added flair, you could garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon but I recommend trying without first. This recipe really is all you need.

Of course, this is a great drink to have for a holiday party or cookie exchange. You can also enjoy this drink while decorating, wrapping gifts or watching holiday movies. No matter what you’re doing, unless its watching holiday movies, don’t forget to put on some festive holiday music!
Spiked Eggnog Recipe Leftovers
If you have any leftovers, store them in the refrigerator. They should be covered. For my pitcher, I just pop on one of these reusable, elastic covers over it. Be sure to enjoy it within a day or two for the best flavor and freshness. The drink will need to be stirred again before enjoying it.
This spiked eggnog recipe is one you’ll return to year after year. Its easy preparation and rich, indulgent flavors make it a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Whether it’s Christmas or a Christmas in July, this eggnog will bring a touch of festive magic to your celebrations.
